Chapter 16

After we finish breakfast, Jacob and I change to wolves and head back to The Academy, leaving Cass at Roberta’s house to get accustomed to her new environment. She’s still shy, but after spending the night listening to Roberta’s stories from her past, she seems a little more open.

We circle around the back of Roberta’s property then head south for a mile before turning back to The Academy, hoping to throw anyone who might want to do us harm off our scent. We’d created a cover story, but we would only use it if necessary since it isn’t very strong. Both of us had disappeared for twenty-four hours and we want to create as little suspicion as possible. It was decided that we weren’t going to tell anyone what happened so we could get a better gauge on what everyone knows. Maybe we will get lucky and whoever tried to poison me will make a misstep. We suspect it was Stephen, but we can’t be certain.

As soon as we get within a mile of The Academy, the wolves on perimeter duty catch our scent and start to follow, escorting us back. I look over at Jacob, with his reddish-brown coat, and wish Wren was here to join us. He should have been part of this. He has missed so much in the last few months.

When we approach the edge of the forest, we change back and walk the rest of the way in human form. As soon as we leave the shade of the forest, I know our plan to silently slip in is not going to work. Edward is standing on the front porch with his arms crossed, our mother beside him.

I try to keep my stride even, but both of my parents’ eyes are drilling into me.

They just stand there, watching us walk across the parking lot, and I feel like I am walking to my execution. I look over at Jacob. With our mom here, it makes our cover story difficult. He nods telling me to just go with it and see what happens.

Edward may not be the best dad, but he sure has mastered the disapproving father look. He says, “Well, do you have anything to say for yourself?”

I look at my mom, begging her to back me up on this. “We went over to Mom’s yesterday afternoon and she wasn't there, so we headed to the basement to hang out and lost all track of time. With all the craziness, we wanted to spend some time together, just the two of us. She may not have even known we were there.” I finish it by sending my mom a smile and hoping she won’t try to poke holes in my story.

I’m hoping Edward either doesn’t know about my guard duty getting drugged or think I slipped by when they were sleeping.

She surprises me by doing the opposite. “I did run to the store in the afternoon, then went to take a bath before calling it an early night and going to bed.
